Stefanie Ernst
Prof. Dr. Stefanie Ernst completed her undergraduate degree in sociology, history and social anthropology at the University of Münster. At the University of Bochum and at the University of Hamburg, she was introduced to the work of Norbert Elias by Professor Hermann Korte who offered research colloquia. Hermann Korte acted as supervisor in her doctoral study in the sociology of gender, work and organisation, which was completed in 1998.
She has taught sociology at the universities of Dortmund, Münster, Osnabrück, Graz, Copenhagen and Bloomington. She is currently professor of sociology at the University of Hamburg. She teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; her research interests are varied including: the sociology of work, organisation and gender; processes of transformation and the wider discipline of sociology more generally; social research methods, esp. process oriented methods. She is currently working on a book on Thinking in figurations: a knowledge sociological study about the next generation of Norbert Elias scholars.
She is chief editor of the journal ‘Sozialwissenschaften und Berufspraxis’ (i.e. Social Sciences and Professional Practise). Stefanie also had been nominated for the Norbert Elias-Amalfi-Prize in 1999, and holds a research grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for a research visit at Nijmegen University in 1999. In 2009 she received a visiting scholarship at Indiana University Bloomington.
